Just some thoughts!
As I sit back and ponder, what is it that Trogs and the Progs really want? Why is there son much hatred and condemnation on all the blogs in New Albany these days? Why are we not working together to solve the problems that have plagued this city for decades?
I can’t for the life of me figure out why anyone would want to run for a public office. Local or national, it seems that in this day and age there more negative reasons to run than there are positive reasons. Why would anyone want to run for mayor of this city knowing full well the circumstances the surround the cities finances and infrastructure?
Yet every four years someone makes the decision to run for mayor, council, or many other positions of public service, why? Are they a glutton for punishment? Do they have some kind of sadistic crave that needs a fix? I don’t have the answers to those questions; however, I have thrown my hat into the ring so to speak. I filed the papers to run for a public office. I have bought campaign paraphernalia to hand out, signs posting my candidacy. What do I hope to achieve with this campaign? I am not sure, I know I want to do something for my community. I want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem! I believe truly that if you do not vote, or do not hold an office you really have no right to gripe. But I digress.
Why did James Garner run for mayor? He sat on the city council for several years before he made the decision to run for office. He had to know the situation the city was in; in fact he voted against or for some of the problems faced today. Yet knowing how bad the finances were in, how bad the audits of the previous administration would be, he made a decision to run! I am not sure in same situation I would have made that decision. To come into an office not knowing exactly what the state the budget was in, and knowing that one would be held accountable, why would anyone want the job?
I have lived 53 years in this city, I have always heard “you can’t do that here in New Albany!” or “that’s just the way things are done here”. But no one can answer this one simple question, why? Why has it always been done that way, why can’t we make changes? I have to admit, I am what I call a very simple man, some college education, but not a degree in law, but I can understand why lawyers choose not to hold public office. They can’t afford the pay cut! It certainly doesn’t pay as well as being a lawyer or doctor.
What I am getting at, have we left the job of running this city to the under educated public? Do those in power not have the ability to make an educated judgment? It would certainly appear so, the divided city council, the lack of respect for the office of the mayor. I guess times have changed, but years ago in the Navy we were taught, you may not respect the man, but you damn well respect the office! I would have to say I learned that way before my time in service, even as a kid, we were taught to respect our elders.
I may have trouble with the man, but from the Mayor of the City of New Albany to President of the United States of America I show a respect for the office. I may not agree with every thing either of the two men holding that office do, but I respect their office.
I wish I knew where these ramblings were heading, but at this moment they are just thought processes that I want to put down so I can come back to them at a later time and try to figure out just what the hell it is that occupies my mind.
